Part of Tina Riesterer's wrap around mural

Many of you know Filthy Wilma’s was (until 4/15/07) a small art gallery at 10 Ruxton Avenue in Manitou Springs, Colorado, but for those of you that don't..................

Lynn Loftus( now of Marathon Key FL) originally rented the space in October of 1993 as a studio, but with all the extra room she decided to put the work of her many artist friends in the shop to help make ends meet.

Given the location on Ruxton Avenue, Lynn wanted a catchy name to draw people up from Manitou Avenue, and just an average name with "gallery" or "pottery" in it was not going to be sufficient. She remembered a story that her parents had told her about a bed and breakfast that they had visited in Alaska called Evil Alice’s, where they were served tea three times a day on fine china and lace tablecloths. The name was one that she had remembered all her life and that was the kind of name she wanted for her shop.

She told the story to Sharon Cupit who then said she always thought that it would be fun to open an establishment called Filthy Wilma’s. We all loved the name and thought it was really funny, so it stuck.

Ned's Restaurant in February 2007

Recently the space at the old Meadowfound building that was Ned’s Restaurant became available. All of the artist/owners at Wilma’s had been wanting to find a new location with more room and a better flow of traffic, so when this building opened up we jumped at the chance.

We ran into a huge problem though, the new landlady hated(I don’t think that’s quite strong enough!) LOATHED the name of our gallery. Try as we might nothing would convince her, as much as we, and so many of our customers loved Filthy Wilma, we had to make a hard choice and change our name.

GREEN HORSE GALLERY a work in progress

Thus the era of Filthy Wilma is ending. We are becoming Green Horse Gallery. The main gallery space is larger than our old one, has room for monthly showings, and double the studio space in the back.( already occupied)  We may have a new name but we will still carry a lot of the same work that we had at Wilma’s along with many new and exciting artists’ work.
